Dr Alhassan Iddrisu replaces Prof Samuel Annim as Govt Statistician
President John Mahama has appointed Dr Alhassan Iddrisu as acting Government Statistician pending mandatory consultations with the Council of State, according to an official statement from the Presidency released Friday night.
The statement, signed by Presidential Spokesperson Felix Kwakye Ofosu, outlined Dr Iddrisu's qualifications for the role.
Currently serving as Director of the Economic Strategy and Research Division at the Ministry of Finance, Dr Iddrisu leads national efforts in macroeconomic analysis, forecasting and policy research.
His responsibilities include coordinating real and external sector assessments while providing technical guidance for Ghana's Macroeconomic Outlook Report.
Experience
Prior to his current position, Dr Iddrisu served as Director of the Economic Research and Forecasting Division from 2013 to 2019, where he supervised national macroeconomic modeling.
Between 2010 and 2013, he acted as Director of the Real Sector Division, leading research on sectoral growth and productivity trends.
The statement highlighted Dr Iddrisu's academic credentials, including a PhD in International Development Studies from Japan's National Graduate Institute for Policy Studies, a Master of Public Administration in Public and Economic Policy from the London School of Economics, and both MPhil and BA degrees in Economics from the University of Ghana.
Beyond his government service, Dr Iddrisu serves as part-time lecturer at the University of Professional Studies, Accra, and has consulted for international organizations including Oxfam GB and the World Bank.
The statement noted his representation of the Ministry on various governing boards and technical committees where he contributes to economic governance decisions.
Consultations
The appointment takes immediate effect, though the statement emphasised this remains subject to completion of constitutionally required consultations with the Council of State.
The President expressed confidence in Dr Iddrisu's ability to provide effective leadership during this transitional period.
The outgoing Government Statistician, Professor Samuel Kobina Annim, was appointed by the previous New Patriotic Party (NPP) administration.
As the head of the Ghana Statistical Service, the Government Statistician is responsible for ensuring the production of high-quality statistical data to inform decision-making at all levels of government.
