Driver’s mate slapped with GH¢3,000 fine for stealing AC copper pipes

A 32-year-old driver’s mate, Jonathan Ablor, has been fined GH¢3,000 by the Adentan Circuit Court for stealing air conditioner copper pipes from a construction site. In default, he will serve two years in prison.

The court, presided over by Angela Attachie, handed down the sentence last Tuesday after Ablor pleaded guilty to the offence.

Brief facts

According to the prosecutor, Chief Inspector Maxwell Lanyo, the complainant, Oswella Osei-Owusu, is a businesswoman and an estate developer who resides at Garden Estate, East Legon Hills, Accra.

He added that on October 2, 2025, at about 6.10 p.m., a witness in the case, Abdulai Alidu, who is a foreman at the complainant’s building site, was inside one of the uncompleted buildings when he spotted the accused cutting air conditioner copper pipes.

The prosecutor noted that the witness quietly approached and, just as Ablor attempted to jump over the wall, he grabbed him and called for help.

The site’s security guard and other nearby residents quickly came to the scene and assisted in arresting the accused, together with the stolen items.

The complainant was informed, and Ablor was taken to the Lakeside Community 8 Police Station, where a formal complaint was lodged.

C/Insp Lanyo added that during interrogation, the accused admitted to the offence in his caution statement. After investigations, he was charged and brought before the court, where he was convicted and sentenced accordingly.
