Eastern Region: Fire Service rescues dog from well

The Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS)successfully rescued a dog that had fallen into a dry well measuring 10.5 metres deep in the Koradaso area of Begoro.

The swift response by personnel from the Begoro Fire Station drew attention on social media and sparked discussion about the broader roles played by the fire service beyond extinguishing fires.

The rescue operation was executed by a six-member team led by Station Officer II Emmanuel Bechim.

According to a statement issued by the Eastern Regional Public Relations Office of the GNFS, the team deployed a ladder and rope system to retrieve the animal from the well without causing it harm.

However, the operation was not without incident. One firefighter sustained a dog bite during the rescue and was immediately taken to a medical facility. He was later treated and discharged, with officials confirming his condition as stable.

In response to a public comment on Facebook describing the event as an unusual occurrence for the fire service, the GNFS clarified that such operations were not uncommon. “It has happened on many occasions. We do sometimes rescue goats too from deep pits. Thank you,” the Service stated.

The incident underscores the expanding scope of work carried out by the GNFS, including animal rescues and other forms of public safety operations that fall outside traditional firefighting.

While the rescued dog was unharmed and reunited with its owners, the operation also served as a reminder of the resourcefulness and readiness of local fire crews to respond to emergencies of varied nature.
