ECG renovates cables in Tema
The improper siting of buildings and other structures in the Tema Metropolis is adversely affecting electricity cables that are laid underground.
The situation has led to numerous electrical faults some of which take a long time to detect and correct.
Concern over structures on ecg cables
This growing situation has become a matter of grave concern to the Electricity Company of Ghana, considering the fact that houses and other properties would have to be pulled down before the sources of the faults could be traced.
To get round the matter, the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) is constructing a 14-kilometre aluminium electric overhead line in the metropolis in replacement of old and faulty underground cables. The project is estimated at US$58 million.
Need for change-over
The underground electricity cables in most parts of the city are described as old, obsolete and prone to faults. Under the prevailing conditions, the state of affairs is calling for an extensive substitution of all underground cables.
Project package
In an interview with the Daily Graphic, Mr Asomani-Wiafe, the Regional Engineer of the Electricity Company of Ghana in Tema, explained that the amount comprised US$26 million that was being used to construct and upgrade electricity sub-stations and a US$20 million component for replacement of cables in the various sub-stations. He said the total project amount also contained a US$2 million that was to be used to change primary distribution lines, as well as US$10 million to improve on low voltage conditions.
Substations in Tema
While on a tour of some electricity sub-stations in the metropolis, Mr Asomani-Wiafe said the main objective for the works was to improve operations by restoring the company’s raw materials in the metropolis in order to meet the growing demand for electric power. He said due to rapid population growth and the city’s expansion, it had become necessary for the ECG’s operations to be in tune with the times.
Effect of improper siting of structures
He said because of increase in population and growth of the city, including residence and industrial concerns, it had become difficult in certain circumstances to even trace the cables since buildings had been put up on them.
Benefits of overhead cables
The overhead lines, which are made of aluminium, can carry more electricity load when compared to cables laid underground. “Overhead cables carry 60 mega watts (MW) of electric energy while underground cables carry 40MW,” he said.
