Fatal accident at Kormantse claims 8 lives

A gory road accident at Kormantse near Saltpond in the Central Region in the early hours of today has claimed eight lives and left five others injured.

The crash involved two vehicles, a Mercedes Benz with registration number AS 4146-25, travelling from Cape Coast towards Accra, and a Hino truck with registration number GW 5958-25, travelling in the opposite direction.

The injured are receiving treatment at the Saltpond Government Hospital.

According to the Regional Public Relations Officer of the Ghana National Fire Service, DOIII Abdul Wasiu Hudu, the Mankessim fire rescue team was dispatched to respond to the accident at around 3:50 am today at Kormantse on the Mankessim–Cape Coast stretch of the Accra–Cape Coast highway.

Mr Hudu said some of the occupants managed to come out of the vehicle safely, while others were rescued by passers-by before the arrival of the fire rescue team.

He said the team extricated two people trapped in the vehicle who were deceased.

Mr Hudu added that the road had since been cleared and opened to traffic with the help of other stakeholders.

He indicated that the cause of the accident is under investigation by the Ghana Police Service.
