Fire outbreak at Kantamanto market in Accra, 13 fire tenders battling inferno
Thirteen fire tenders have been marshalled from various areas in Greater Accra to fight an ongoing fire incident at the Kantamanto market in Accra central.
The fire which started around 1:00 am has destroyed many shops in the market.
The incident is at the Kantamanto Railways area.
The Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) responded to the distress call with an initial five fire appliances from Makola, Greater Accra Regional Headquarters, National Headquarters, Flagstaff House, and Parliament House to combating the blaze.
The Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) was called upon to cut power supply to the area to facilitate firefighting.
An additional of three fire tenders from Circle, Trade Fair and Dansoman were also dispatched to assist, to bring the total to eight appliances after about an hour of fighting the incident.
Later, two more fire tenders from Abelenkpe and Kasapreko also joined the operation, increasing the total number of appliances to 10.
Additional appliances from Tema Regional Headquarters and Madina were also at the scene, before another one from the Legon Fire Station joined bringing the total number of appliances to 13.
The large deployment of resources was part of the GNFS' efforts to combat the blaze effectively and bring it under control.
As of 6am, personnel from the GNFS were still battling the inferno after five hours that it started.
