The move is part of GCNet’s strategy to support capacity building of its key stakeholders, especially its principal partner, Customs.

The exercise will see the clearing automation service provider replace about 600 of pieces of computers and accessories the Customs Division

The Deputy General Manager of GCNet, Mr Emmanuel Darko, said at the presentation ceremony of the equipment at the Commissioner General’s office in Accra that although the GRA was a shareholder of GCNet, the Customs Division and the Domestic Tax Revenue Division were close stakeholders.

“We have shared aspirations and goals, and it is imperative that we come to show our commitment to the cause of the GRA in its quest to mobilise revenue for the government. It is in this vein that we present to you 600 computers.”

Some of the computers will also be deployed to new sites being brought on board such as the Weija DVLA, Customs’ new sites and some new units involved in warehousing operations.

Mr Darko expressed the hope that the hardware would adequately equip officers to effectively discharge their duties.

He said Tema, being the heartbeat of Customs operations, would get the largest number of computers.

The Commissioner General of the GRA, Mr George Blankson, expressed his appreciation to GCNet for its kind gesture.

He indicated that the partnership between the two entities went back a long way, saying: “Since then we have seen a great transformation which has resulted in revenue growing by leaps and bounds.”

Mr Blankson said the 600 computers would enable the revenue agency to renew, modernise and be able to replace some of the old computers that had passed their peak.

“We will also be able to roll out to new areas, some new sites, DVLA offices and so on and the warehousing regime that has been one that is known to have considerable challenges,” he said, adding that with such partnership there was always room for improvement.

Mr Blankson gave the assurance that the computers would be distributed in a manner that would promote the strategic objective of the GRA, particularly in the area of revenue target realisation this year.

In recent weeks, GCNet donated 35 laptops to the Valuation Department of Customs to supports its training programme and to build its capacity.
