Ghana becomes 5th African country to offer visa-free travel for holders of African passports

Ghana has become the fifth African country to grant visa-free travel to holders of African passports, effective January 1, 2025. 

This landmark policy, announced by outgoing President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo during his final State of the Nation Address, aims to strengthen continental integration and aligns with the African Union’s Agenda 2063 and the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA).

In his address, President Akufo-Addo stated: “I am proud to have approved visa-free travel to Ghana for all African passport holders, with effect from the beginning of this year. This is the logical next step to the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) and the workings of the largest trading block in the world. All these are essential elements to the realisation of the AU’s Agenda 2063, which envisages an integrated and connected Africa by 2063.”

The new policy positions Ghana alongside Rwanda, Seychelles, The Gambia, and Benin, as part of a progressive group of African nations fostering seamless travel within the continent.

This initiative is expected to boost tourism, trade, and investment while solidifying Ghana's reputation as a leader in promoting African unity and cooperation.

With the AfCFTA Secretariat headquartered in Accra, this move underscores Ghana's commitment to driving Africa's economic and political integration.

The visa-free policy not only opens doors to easier mobility for African travellers but also reinforces Ghana's strategic role in the continent’s journey towards greater connectivity and collaboration.
