Ghana in talks with WAHO to host new West African health office in Accra
Ghana is in discussions with the West African Health Organisation (WAHO) about the possible establishment of a new regional office in Accra.
A delegation from the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), led by WAHO Director General Dr Melchior Athanase Joël Aissi, met with officials from the Ministry of Health on Monday, April 14 2025, to consider the proposal.
The meeting forms part of WAHO’s efforts to strengthen health coordination across West Africa.
Ghana’s location and track record in public health have been cited as factors in the ongoing talks.
Minister for Health, Mr Kwabena Mintah Akandoh, received the delegation and acknowledged WAHO’s interest in closer ties with Ghana.
He also indicated Ghana’s readiness to support regional health initiatives.
The proposed office would support the coordination of public health activities in the sub-region. It would cover disease surveillance, emergency response, and cross-border health planning. It would also allow for technical exchange among ECOWAS member states.
WAHO officials noted Ghana’s contributions to regional health projects, especially in the areas of research and infrastructure.
They described the visit as part of broader efforts to improve coordination.
According to the Ministry of Health, the office, if approved, would enhance Ghana’s role in health matters in West Africa and beyond.
