Ghana, Jamaica to deepen ties as Foreign Minister Ablakwa begins three-day official visit

Ghana’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, is expected to arrive in Jamaica on Saturday for a three-day official visit aimed at deepening diplomatic and development cooperation between the two countries.

According to Jamaica’s Minister of Foreign Affairs and Foreign Trade, Kamina Johnson Smith, the visit will feature high-level engagements focused on strengthening bilateral relations and expanding collaboration in key sectors, including trade, investment, health, education, tourism and technical exchange.

The visit coincides with the celebration of more than five decades of diplomatic relations between Ghana and Jamaica, underscoring longstanding historical and cultural ties between the two countries.

“We look forward to warmly welcoming Minister Ablakwa this weekend,” Johnson Smith said in a statement issued on Friday.

She noted that the visit would also provide an opportunity for Minister Ablakwa to interact with Ghanaian military personnel currently supporting Jamaica’s recovery efforts.

“The visit is not only a great opportunity for him to visit with the 54 Ghana Defence Force members who are here providing excellent recovery and rebuilding support, but also an opportunity for us to advance our bilateral cooperation, bringing modern elements to our deep historical ties,” she said.

Ablakwa will be joined during the visit by Jamaica’s ministers responsible for health, education and culture, as well as their respective technical teams, as discussions are expected to span a broad range of policy and development issues.

The Ghanaian Foreign Minister is also scheduled to pay a courtesy call on Jamaica’s Prime Minister, Dr Andrew Holness, and to visit Ghanaian engineers and medical personnel deployed in the country.

A contingent of 49 Ghanaian army engineers and five medical doctors has been stationed in Jamaica since December 18, 2025, to support recovery and reconstruction efforts following the passage of Hurricane Melissa.
