Abu Trica admitted to GH¢30million bail

The High Court in Accra has admitted Frederick Kumi, popularly known as Abu Trica, to bail in the sum of GH¢30 million with two sureties to be justified as his extradition proceedings to the United States continue.

Kumi was arrested in Ghana last December after United States authorities indicted him for allegedly helping to run a romance scam network that stole more than $8 million from elderly American victims.

Several attempts to secure bail for him since his arrest have hit a snag.

In March this year, the Gbese District Court  dismissed a preliminary objection filed by  Abu Trica against extradition proceedings initiated by the United States.

The court, presided over by Anna Akosua Appiah Gottfried Anaafi Gyasi, held that the offences forming the basis of the extradition, particularly wire fraud, constituted extraditable offences under the 1931 treaty between Ghana and the United States.

Kumi has in turn,  filed a lawsuit against the Minister of the Interior and other investigative bodies over the manner in which he was arrested in December 2025, detained and interrogated during investigations.

The other bodies in his suit are the Narcotics Control Commission, the US Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) and the Attorney-General.

His application for the enforcement of his fundamental human rights under Article 33 of the 1992 Constitution was filed by his lawyer at the Human Rights Division of the High Court.

He is seeking compensation of GH¢10 million for the violation of his constitutional rights.

The suit is also against EOCO’s statement, describing him as a “notorious cyber-criminal” and publicly portraying him as being involved in large-scale criminal activities and fraud without being convicted by any court of competent jurisdiction
