Akufo-Addo’s statue pulled down in Sekondi
The controversial statue of former President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, located at the roundabout close to the entrance of the old casualty Effia-Nkwanta Regional Referral Hospital in Sekondi, has been destroyed by unknown persons.
A source close to the police said they received information about the incident and promptly rushed to the scene “By the time we got there, the damage had already been done.”
The statue has been toppled and destroyed, with the head to the knee area smashed. It reportedly occurred at about 1:30 am on Monday under the cover of darkness.
The statue was unveiled on November 6, 2024 to honour the former president for what the sponsors described as “unprecedented development of the Western Region” under the regime of the government of the New Patriotic Party.
The statue after it was unveiled received huge public backlash with varied opinions while some threatened to bring it down after December 7 general election. Others threatened to relocate it to the home town of the former president.
The statue, after various threats first saw the removal of the plaque followed by another attempt leading to the damage of the one of the legs in December 2024.
A gaping hole at the back of the left leg sparked widespread speculation about the cause of the damage, with some residents suspecting deliberate vandalism and others attributing it to possible structural defects.
The sponsors of the statue were said to have called those molded it to get the damaged foot repaired.
A police officer who was providing security at the scene from 6:00 pm was surprised at the new development.
