Court remands NPP Bono Regional Chairman

The Bono Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Kwame Baffoe a.k.a Abronye, has been remanded into police custody.

The accused was charged with two counts of publication of false news and offensive conduct conducive to the breach of peace when he appeared before the Circuit Court in Accra yesterday.

Abronye has been accused of stating on a television platform that all strategic meetings conducted by the National Democratic Congress (NDC) at Akwatia had the Inspector General of Police (IGP in attendance.

Again, the Bono Regional Chairman is alleged to have stated that the current IGP, Tetteh Yohuno, is the “most corrupt” IGP in the country’s history.

His plea with respect to the charges was not taken.

He was hauled to the court in the police service’s Black Maria, a prison on wheels.

Remand

The prosecution, led by Chief Inspector Ebenezer Teye Okuffo, prayed the court to remand the accused person into custody pending further investigations into the matter.

He added that if the accused was granted bail, it would hamper our ability to investigate this matter.

“The Accused was arrested yesterday.

We don’t want to breach the 48-hour rule, which is why we brought him before the court so that he can be remanded into custody and we can conduct a thorough investigation into this matter,” the prosecutor told the court, adding that the nature of Abronye’s alleged offence pertained to national security.

Daniel Nii Martey Addo, who represented the accused, prayed for bail on the grounds that his client was not a flight risk.

He further told the court that Abronye voluntarily and willingly attended the police invitation extended to him, adding, “He will always make himself available to the court or when the police call on him”.

After listening to both sides, the court remanded the accused person.

He is to reappear on September 12 this year.
