In a solemn display of Pan-African solidarity, Gabonese President Brice Clotaire Oligui Nguema paid homage to former President Jerry John Rawlings at the military cemetery in Burma Camp yesterday, where he laid a wreath on the tombstone of the former President as part of his three-day official visit.
The emotional ceremony, which formed a significant part of the Gabonese leader's itinerary, saw the presence of members of the Rawlings family, including the Executive Director of the J.J. Rawlings Foundation, Yaa Asantewaa Agyeman-Rawlings, who led two of her siblings, Amina Agyeman-Rawlings and Kimathi Agyeman-Rawlings, to grace the occasion.
President Nguema, who arrived in Accra on July 28 and was hosted by President John Dramani Mahama, stood in contemplative silence before the final resting place of Ghana's former Head of State, whose influence, he said, had transcended borders and generations.
Enduring legacy
In a tribute that resonated with the weight of history, President Nguema spoke passionately about the enduring impact of Rawlings' philosophy on Gabon's own democratic journey.
"President Rawlings' commitment, leadership and attachment to the ideals of sovereignty, justice and progress will continue to inspire present and future generations," the Gabonese leader declared, his voice echoing across the manicured grounds of the military cemetery.
"His speeches and writings have notably tcontributed to the success story of Gabon's transition, which is now quoted as an example in the world," President Nguema added.
"We are now able to be transparent, peaceful and credible. I would like to hail the contributions of this great man to a strong and united Africa,” he said.
The Gabonese President's words carried particular significance, given his own nation's recent political transformation, which has drawn international attention for its peaceful character.
Family's gratitude
Yaa Asantewaa Agyeman-Rawlings, delivering the vote of thanks on behalf of the Rawlings family, extended the deepest gratitude of both the family and the people of Ghana to President Nguema for what she described as a "solemn gesture" that affirmed the enduring camaraderie between the peoples of Ghana and Gabon.

Ms Agyeman-Rawlings, who is the second daughter of the former President, emphasised the symbolic weight of the occasion, noting that the wreath-laying ceremony represented more than just a diplomatic courtesy.
"Today, through this act of remembrance, we are reminded that while those great statesmen have completed their earthly journey, they have entrusted us with the sacred responsibility of preserving and strengthening the bonds they forged.
"May this wreath stand as a symbol that the baton of brotherhood has been passed to the present generation of leaders in Ghana and Gabon, who will continue to deepen the ties between our two nations for the benefit of our peoples,” she said.
