The institution was founded on December 1, 2016, as a specialised deposit-taking financial institution through the GAF Provident Fund, leading to the inauguration of the head office at Burma Camp in Accra.

Subsequently, other branches have been established in barracks in Michel Camp, Ho, Takoradi, Sunyani, Kumasi, Tamale and Wa respectively.

Financial needs

In a keynote address read on his behalf during the official inauguration of the SIS&L branch in Bolgatanga last Friday, the Chief of Defense Staff (CDS), Lieutenant General Thomas Oppong-Peprah, said the move demonstrated how far the institution had come to serve its clients.

He said SIS & L was established to cater to the financial needs of the GAF in a bid to better the economic fortunes of the rank and file of the GAF, adding that “this institution operates a module akin to the credit union system to serve its customers”.

He indicated that over the years, this module had proven to be significantly beneficial to the troops and their families and added that SIS&L’s business method, when effectively managed, was expected to yield maximum returns to its numerous stakeholders.

“I am, therefore, optimistic that SIS&L will thrive and become a force to reckon with in the banking sector in the future,” he said and further urged the personnel, defence civilian staff and the public to patronise the services of the institution.

Commitment

The Board Chairman, SIS&L, Major (Rtd) Amarkai Amarteifio, said the opening of the branch signified their long-term commitment to delivering innovative banking services to the officers and civilian employees of the GAF.

“Despite these challenges, SIS&L, the first financial institution for the security services in Ghana, has remained steadfast and resilient, navigating these storms with confidence, and making strides in the banking sector,” he said.

He added that since the institution’s inception, it had consistently posted profits, which was a testament to robust corporate practices and prudent risk management and indicated that SIS&L had stayed to its vision of becoming the primary financial institution of choice.

The Board Chairman said the opening of the new office building was a reaffirmation of their commitment to serve the financial needs of the GAF, stressing “Our goal is to have a physical presence in all GAF garrisons nationwide so as to bring banking services to your doorsteps and tents”.
