He said due to inadequate adherence to proper guidelines in project management, some public projects were not properly executed, leading to financial loss to the country.

“Globally, for every $1 billion invested in a project, $101 million is wasted. These are funds that could have been utilised for other projects to help in sustainable development,” he said.

Mr Owusu-Asamoah was speaking at the sixth Annual National Project Management Conference and Project Management Excellence Awards at Kwahu-Nkwatia in the Eastern Region.

Conference

The event, which was on the theme: “Sustainable Project Management Futures: Shaping a Resilient and Inclusive World”, brought together more than 300 project management professionals, experts in the field, and other stakeholders.

It focused on issues relating to sustainable practices in project management and how they would be harnessed to continue to effectively contribute to national development.

Topics for discussion included innovative strategies, adaptive leadership, technology integration, sustainability in project management, remote project management, agile development, data-driven decision-making, diversity, equity and inclusion, and generative artificial intelligence (AI).

Commitment

Mr Owusu-Asamoah said the PMI was committed to contributing its quota to national development by offering advisory services for the successful implementation of government projects, as well as those by other stakeholders.

He said project management was at the heart of any successful project implementation, and that it was imperative for the government and all stakeholders to make it an important tool for sustainable development.

He urged project management professionals and industry players to collaborate with the PMI Ghana chapter to create innovative strategies for the benefit of the country. "As a chapter, we have seen the need to engage our stakeholders, including the government of Ghana, because we have a lot to offer.

That is why this conference is important as it gives us the opportunity to deepen such collaboration efforts and discuss ways of better positioning the industry,” he said. The Managing Director of PMI in Sub-Saharan Africa, George Asamani, said PMI as a global body was dedicated to bringing project management professionals together to share knowledge and expertise for sustainable development.

For her part, the immediate past President of PMI Ghana, Jumoke Lafenwa, said the PMI's goal was to provide value for stakeholders and ensure the availability of skilled project management professionals in the execution of projects for national development.
