Preserving his legacy would be a fitting way to immortalise the man who played a significant role not only in broadcasting but also the other facets of his professional life.

At the signing of the Book of Condolence last Friday, the Group Joint Managing Director, Ramesh Sadhwani, emphasised the company's commitment to honour him and ensure his legacy endures.

“We believe that with your work, we can collaborate to honour him and protect his legacy. We will let the name of our departed brother live with us forever,” Mr  Sadhwani said.

The Group Joint Managing Director was accompanied by the Group General Manager, Francis Sam; Head of Legal and Corporate Affairs, Samira Abdul-Azeez, and Communications Manager, Sebastian Korle-Haward.

Mr Avenorgbo, who passed away on August 19, was a key figure in the Melcom Group for over 13 years and played a significant role in initiatives such as the company’s annual blood drive, which was supported by the National Blood Bank.

Condolence

Conveying the Group’s condolences, Mr Sadhwani said: “We are here to offer our condolences on behalf of the board, management and staff of Melcom Group.”

He further emphasised Mr Avenorgbo’s role in the company, noting that the late Avenorgbo was an integral part of the  senior management team for 13 years, and his contributions to the company and the country would never be forgotten.

“He served with great honour and has left a permanent mark on all of us,” Mr Sadhwani said.

He further highlighted his impact beyond Melcom, particularly through his leadership in organising the company’s annual blood drive.

Proposal

The President of the GJA, Albert Kwabena Dwumfour, for his part, shared heartfelt memories of working closely with the late broadcaster, describing him as a trailblazer and a dynamic individual who was always ready to serve, regardless of his age.

To preserve the memory, Mr Dwumfour proposed a new award category at the 28th GJA Awards, aligning with Mr Avenorgbo’s final role as chairman of the GJA’s 75th anniversary committee.

The award, he said, would recognise individuals who had made significant contributions to the media landscape in the country to reflect Mr Avenorgbo’s commitment to ethics and professionalism.

Funeral details

The burial service for Mr Avenorgbo, who was also a former Executive Member of the GJA and a broadcast journalist with the Ghana Broadcasting Corporation (GBC), is scheduled for September 14, 2024, at Lashibi Funeral Home in Accra.
