MP cuts sod for construction of ‘Bonka Adjei’ storm drain
A wide and deep storm drain at Akyem Oda Old Town, known as Bonka Adjei, has been awarded on contract.
The drain had become a death trap and had over the years not received any funding to get it properly moulded to ensure efficient carting of storm water.
Residents had their worries answered after several appeals, when the Member of Parliament (MP) for Akyem Oda, Mr William Agyapong Quaitoo, last week cut the sod for Sonatrust Company Limited, contractors for the GH¢500,000 project, to commence work.
According to Mr Quaitoo, the first phase of the project, which was under the sanitation module of the Infrastructure for Poverty Eradication Programme (IPEP), would cover a distance of 250 metres.
The IPEP is a component of the one million dollars constituency fund aimed at facilitating rapid development of constituencies in the country.
He said when it was completed, the new drain would, among other things, ensure proper discharge of waste water and forestall it from getting choked up during and after rainfall periods, as well as prevent residents from falling into it.
He assured residents that the government would do everything possible to prevent incidences of flooding and unsanitary conditions in the area.
Quality work
The MP advised the contractor to not only ensure that the work was of quality but to also deliver on time to bring relief to the residents.
Commendation
The Krontihene of the Akyem Kotoku Traditional Area, Obrempong Gyamfi Saforo Kyere, commended the MP for his assistance in making the project a reality and lauded the government for coming to the aid of residents living close to the drain.
He furthermore praised the government for implementing the free senior high school programme (SHS), which is helping many children in the traditional area to have access to SHS education.
Also present at the sod-cutting ceremony was the Birim Central Municipal Chief Executive, Mr Kwabena Ankomah Bempong; the Safohene of the Akyem Kotoku stool, Nana Ofori Atta IV; Akyem Oda Constituency Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Mr Awudu Issaka and Mr Rahard Debrah, Urban Roads Engineer, Birim Central municipality.
