Poor leadership, Ghana's biggest problem — Methodist Church Presiding Bishop

The Presiding Bishop of The Methodist Church Ghana, Most Rev. Professor Johnson Kwabena Asamoah-Gyadu, has stated that poor leadership has been the biggest problem of the country.

He observed that everywhere in the country, one found a problem with leadership.

"Ghana is not a poor country. It's mismanagement and the stealing of our resources by selfish leaders that have brought us where we are.

So, i'd like to urge you to use the opportunity God has given you to serve God's people," he admonished.

He said this yesterday, January 11, in a sermon after inducting a nine-member Connexional officers of the Methodist Guild at the Bethel Methodist Church in the New Aplaku Circuit.

The officers, who have Maxwell Amoah as their Chairman, were elected during the 19th/30th Delegates Connexional Guild Conference held in October last year, and have accepted to serve the Lord, the church and the Methodist Guild.

The other officers are the Vice-Chairman, Noah Bright Ayisi;  immediate past Chairman, Patience Ameyaa Sam; Secretary, Benjamin Fiifi Graham; assistant Secretary, Esther Armoo; Treasurer, Francis Kofi Arko, and the organiser, Paul Clement Frimpong.

The rest are  evangelism Coordinator,  Wilhelmina Mavis Baiden; co-opted member, Emmanuel Panyin Eshun; co-opted member, Atta Dabone Snr; and executive member, Evangelist Ebenezer Fosu Dadzie.

Most Rev. Professor Asamoah-Gyadu charged the new officers not to enter the office they had been elected to with any set agenda.

Leadership

"I'd like to challenge you to make a difference.

Today's leadership is called and anointed for purpose.

It is the Spirit of God who anoints God's people for God's purpose.

So, see this position as a position in which you are anointed to serve.

Leadership is about service, and Christian leadership is about washing people's feet, giving of yourself to them," he said.

Taking his sermon text from Mark 1:1, he said Christian leadership was about bearing witness to the gospel of Jesus Christ, and as such, their credibility as witnesses should begin with the encounter with the word of Jesus.

He said serving God's people demanded serving in a selfless manner, explaining that Christian leadership did not begin with asking the question, 'what is in it for me?' rather, 'what can I do for you?'

Earlier, inducting the new officers, Most Rev. Professor Asamoah-Gyadu said they had been given a great and delicate responsibility which was also a privilege and an opportunity they must use in fulfilment of the Lord’s will.

He asked them to cultivate always the Lord’s presence so that they might always be found faithful in their stewardship.

"You are not on your own.

You are bought at a price.

So, glorify God in your body and spirit, which are God's.

Do not neglect the gift that you have.

Give heed to prayer, reading, and to teaching.

If any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask God who gives to all men generously and without reproach," he advised.

Promise

The inductees promised, among others, to dedicate to serve God in the work for which they had been elected, and also lead people to the knowledge of Christ's love and into the fellowship of His church.

The mandate of the Guild of the Methodist Church Ghana is to mobilise the youth and adults for the work of the church.

Mr Amoah, who becomes the 14th Connexional Chairman of the Guild by his induction, outlined his vision during his tenure to include a focus on the leadership of the youth in the church, infrastructure development in the Bolgatanga Diocese of the church and empowerment of the members of the Guild through strategies to create employment opportunities.
