Sacred Heart Confraternity partners We Care to plant trees

The Sacred Heart Confraternity, an association in the Catholic Church, in collaboration with We Care, an environmental non-governmental organisation (NGO), has planted over 150 trees on the grounds of Our Lady of Assumption (OLA) Parish in New Achimota in Accra.

The event was part of the Sacred Heart Confraternity Month programme, aimed at bringing together parishioners of the church, local youth groups and environmental advocates to make an impact on the environment.

The initiative was supported by the OLA Parish, the Pope's Laudato Si initiative and the Green Action Plan of the Ghana Catholic Bishops Conference.

Rationale

The President of the OLA Sacred Heart Confraternity, Apostle Anthony Nana Boateng, said the initiative was more than just planting trees; but was about planting hope and creating a sustainable future for generations to come.

“Volunteers meticulously planted over 150 trees across the parish grounds and nearby public spaces, transforming the area into a burgeoning green sanctuary,” he said.

Each tree, he said, was not only a commitment to the environment but also the collective effort and unity of the parish community. He said, “members of the Confraternity, including the energetic Tarcisians, the youth group of the confraternity, were out in full force. Armed with shovels, watering cans and an array of saplings, volunteers of all ages worked side by side”.

Nana Boateng thanked We Care for their commitment to nurturing the planet, ensuring that the legacy of today’s efforts will continue to grow and thrive for generations to come.

Resources

The Chief Executive Officer of We Care, Dr Opoku Mensah, said as part of their commitment to promoting eco-friendly practices, they had supported the initiative with their expertise and resources of a renowned environmental NGO.

“We provided essential guidance on tree planting techniques, ensuring that each sapling was given the best chance to flourish,” he said.

He said they conducted an educational session on the names of the saplings and their long-term care and significance of trees in combating climate change and enhancing urban landscapes.

Testament

The Vice-President of the OLA Sacred Heart Confraternity, Dr Emefa Takyi-Amoako, said the tree planting event was a testament to their faith, which was intertwined with their responsibility towards the earth.

“It's amazing to see everyone come together and contribute to such a meaningful cause,” she added. She emphasised the importance of environmental stewardship but also showcased the power of community collaboration.

“It serves as an inspiring example for other communities, demonstrating that with collective effort and a shared vision, significant strides can be made towards a greener, more sustainable future,” she added.

A member of the OLA Sacred Heart Confraternity, Juliana Asare-Boadu, also encouraged the youth to plant more trees.

The Tarcisians expressed their excitement to be part of the initiative, saying, “It's incredibly fulfilling knowing that the trees we plant today will grow and benefit the environment for years to come”.
