SSNIT pensioners visit Graphic

The Abeka District branch of the Pensioners’ Association of Ghana yesterday paid a visit to the Graphic Communications Group Ltd (GCGL) as part of their quarterly excursion programme.

The visit was aimed at exposing members to national institutions to help them stay active and informed after retirement.

It also formed part of the association’s long-standing programme of engaging pensioners in recreational and educational activities to enhance their well-being.

Rationale

The Chairman of the association, Yahaya Yiwere, explained that the group met on the third Thursday of every month at Abeka and also undertook excursions on a quarterly basis.

“For the past five years, we have been engaging in such activities, and excursions have become part and parcel of our programme.

“We make sure that at least once every year, the group makes sure members go out to learn and interact with institutions,” he said.

The chairman said the initiative was not only recreational but also educational as it allowed members who had worked for decades to gain fresh knowledge about national institutions and remain engaged in society.

Membership

The chairman further said that the association’s membership was made up of pensioners under the Social Security and National Insurance Trust (SSNIT).

“When a worker goes on retirement and completes the necessary processes at the SSNIT office, he or she is directed to join a local pensioners’ association within the community.

That is how members become part of the Abeka District branch,” he said, describing the group as a lovely association that offers companionship, support and opportunities for members to remain active after retirement.

Competitions

Mr Yiwere highlighted the achievements the group had attained to include winning a national competition for the aged.

“We received a beautiful trophy and medals, and in October this year, we are hopeful of winning again,” he said.

The chairman added that the branch had been excelling in quiz competitions organised for pensioners.

Mr Yiwere expressed the hope that they would win an upcoming programme for the aged, being organised by the Centre for Relief Foundation (CRF), an CSO.

The programme is scheduled to take place on October 1, 2025, at the Officers’ Mess at the 37 Military Hospital in Accra.

The chairman expressed appreciation to GCGL for opening its doors to them, and said that such visits motivated pensioners, enriched their lives and kept them connected to the institutions that continued to shape the country’s development.

Credibility

The News Editor, Daily Graphic, Samuel Doe Ablordeppey, welcomed members of the association to the newsroom, and took them through the processes in news gathering.

He said the Daily Graphic, the flagship of GCGL, had always produced credible news by duly following the tenets of journalism over the years.

Mr Ablordeppey said as the leading newspaper which would be commemorating its 75 years celebration in October, this year, “we cannot afford to lower the bar since we are the conscience of the nation”.

He, therefore, entreated the public to always patronise the paper and its sister publications —The Mirror, Showbiz, Graphic Sports, Junior Graphic and Graphic online for credible news.
