Sunon Asogli restarts operation
The government has reached a deal with electricity generator, Sunon Asogli Power (Ghana) Limited to resume operations as soon as possible after receiving some payment.
The company, one of the key independent power producers, was compelled in October this year to suspend operations creating a deficit of about 560 megawatts (MW).

A statement signed by the Chairman of the company, Qun Yang, expressed the company’s appreciation to the Minister of Finance, Dr Mohammed Amin Adam, and the Minister of Energy, Herbert Krapa, for their interventions to release an emergency funding to address the critical financial need of the company.
“I must say we have returned to operations today, Monday, November 25, 2024 at 3 p.m. and we have submitted our final version of the Restructuring Terms Sheet to the Ministry of Finance and Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) in August, for finalisation and signing soon,” he said.
The statement added that Sunon Asogli was confident that a win-win solution that would ensure the stability and reliability of the country’s energy sector would be achieved.
“We hope the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) can adhere to the spirit of the contract and diligently honour their financial obligations in the power purchase agreement (PPA),” it added.
The statement also commended the President for his intervention in ensuring the payment to the company, enabling it to resume operations.
It, however, said the company deeply regreted the impact of its shutdown.

“The non-payment and such magnitude of megawatts of power off the national grid pose threats to pending general elections which are likely to run into the night,” the statement said.
