Ghana weather today: GMet forecasts rain, mist and thunderstorms across parts of the country

The Ghana Meteorological Agency (GMet) has forecast a mix of rain, mist and thunderstorms across different parts of the country today, warning that wet weather conditions are likely to persist in several areas from morning through the evening.

According to the agency's latest 18-hour forecast, light to moderate rainfall is expected this morning along sections of the coastline and in a few communities within the Oti Region. The rain is likely to continue intermittently along coastal communities into the afternoon and evening.

GMet said much of the country will begin the day under mostly cloudy skies, while mist and patches of fog are expected over forest and mountainous areas during the early hours. These conditions are expected to reduce visibility, particularly for motorists travelling through highland and forest zones.

As the day progresses, thunderstorms accompanied by rain are forecast to develop over the middle belt, transition zone and northern sectors. These storms are expected to intensify from late afternoon and continue into the evening.

The impact-based forecast indicates generally low weather-related risk across most parts of the country. However, some coastal areas, particularly around the Greater Accra and Volta regions, could experience moderate impacts during the afternoon as intermittent rain continues. Similar moderate conditions are also expected around parts of the middle belt later in the day.

Temperatures are expected to remain relatively mild despite the wet conditions. Coastal areas are forecast to record minimum temperatures of about 23 degrees Celsius and highs of around 30 degrees Celsius, while the forest and transition belts are expected to reach maximum temperatures of 33 degrees Celsius after overnight lows of between 22 and 23 degrees Celsius. Northern Ghana is expected to be the warmest part of the country, with temperatures ranging from 25 degrees Celsius in the morning to as high as 34 degrees Celsius during the afternoon.

In Accra, residents should expect slight rain during the morning, followed by more rain in the afternoon before conditions ease to slight rain under mostly cloudy skies later in the evening. Similar weather is forecast for Tema, Kasoa, Winneba, Cape Coast, Takoradi and Axim, where intermittent rainfall is expected throughout much of the day.

Communities in the forest zone, including Kumasi, Koforidua, Akim Oda, Obuasi, Tarkwa and Goaso, are likely to experience mist during the morning before thunderstorms or cloudy conditions develop later in the day. In the northern half of the country, cities such as Tamale, Yendi, Wa, Bolgatanga, Bole and Nalerigu are expected to remain mostly cloudy through the morning before thunderstorms become more widespread in the afternoon and evening.

GMet has also advised that the state of the sea will be rough, urging fishermen, coastal residents and other users of marine waters to exercise caution.

The agency has encouraged the public to stay updated with official weather information and factor the expected rainfall, reduced visibility and possible thunderstorms into their travel and outdoor plans throughout the day.
