GNFS contains fire at Arts Centre; Over 50 wooden structures lost

The Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) has confirmed that it successfully brought under control a fire that swept through wooden structures at the Arts Centre in Accra on Tuesday, June 24, 2025.

The blaze, which erupted opposite the National Lotteries office, did not result in any injuries or fatalities.

In a statement posted on its official Facebook page, the GNFS noted that the fire was reported at 6:20 pm and had already reached an advanced stage by the time the crew from the Ministries Fire Station arrived at 6:26 pm.

Due to non-functional hydrants in the area, four additional fire engines were dispatched from the Electoral Commission, Accra City, Parliament House, and the Greater Accra Regional Headquarters substations to support the operation.

The firefighting teams managed to bring the fire under control by 7:00 pm and completely extinguished it by 8:44 pm. Although over 50 wooden structures and their contents were destroyed, GNFS personnel were able to salvage adjoining structures, preventing further damage in the densely built-up area.

Senior officers, including ACFO II Osmond Anum and Greater Accra Regional Fire Commander ACFO II Rashid Nisawu, were present at the scene to supervise and coordinate the operation.

Investigations into the cause of the fire are currently ongoing, the GNFS added.

The incident comes amid rising concerns over the safety of makeshift wooden structures in commercial centres, particularly in areas with limited access to functional fire hydrants.
