Government deploys troops to restore calm in Nkwanta amid chieftaincy dispute

The government has deployed police and military forces to Nkwanta in the Oti Region, following renewed violence stemming from a longstanding chieftaincy dispute.

The unrest has led to heavy gunfire and widespread panic, with many residents fleeing their homes in search of safety.

The acting spokesperson for President John Mahama, Felix Kwakye Ofosu in a post on X on Friday, January 17, said the swift deployment of security personnel aims to restore calm and prevent further escalation.

“The government is committed to ensuring the safety of all residents and urges the feuding factions to lay down their arms and engage in dialogue,” Mr.  Kwakye Ofosu stated.

History of conflict

The Nkwanta area has been plagued by chieftaincy disputes, with deep-seated disagreements over traditional leadership fueling recurrent violence.

In January 2024, tensions peaked during a traditional festival, resulting in clashes that left at least 17 people dead. Despite efforts to broker peace through agreements signed by traditional leaders, the conflict remains unresolved.

The latest outbreak has reignited fears of prolonged instability, as reports of gunfire have forced families to abandon their homes.

The government has reiterated its commitment to fostering peace in the region. Authorities are calling on all parties involved to exercise restraint and prioritize dialogue to resolve the underlying issues.
