A student of the Government Secretarial School, identified as Freda Asare, 19, drowned in a gutter at Dansoman Agege in Accra after she left home at about 6 a.m. to go and write her examination in her school at Cantonments, a suburb of Accra.

The body of Freda was found by some residents nearby after the about six-hour rainfall.

Her body has since been deposited at the Korle Bu Teaching Hospital mortuary.

The date for Freda’s funeral is yet to be fixed, but family members say arrangement would be made to bury her as early as possible.

When the Daily Graphic visited the family house of the deceased, some family members and friends had come to sympathise with the parents, Mr and Mrs Alex Asare, both traders.

Others had also come to share fond memories of the late Freda.

The Daily Graphic team also learnt that the Chief Executive of the Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA), Dr Alfred Okoe Vanderpuije, had come to sympathise with the family.

According to some family members, the AMA boss promised to attend the funeral of the late Freda if he was given prior notice.

Briefing the Daily Graphic, the mother of Freda, Mrs Faustina Asare, said she was distraught by the passing of her daughter.

“It is very painful to see my daughter pass away, since she never complained of any ache in any part of her body,” she said, as tears flowed freely from her eyes.

Background

Parts of Accra, the national capital, were submerged by water last Tuesday after about six hours of rainfall.

The rain, which started from 4 a.m. to 10 a.m., caused a lot of inconvenience to both motorists and pedestrians with some vehicles getting stuck on the roads.

Pedestrians faced difficulties making their way around gutters and pools of water to go about their daily activities.

Economic activities were generally slow, as some workers and traders remained in their homes as a result of the rainfall.

Some students and pupils too were not able to go to school while some schools were flooded.

Some major drains in the capital overflowed their banks while the Odaw River brought out all the garbage, including plastic and e-waste, dumped into it.

The floods took over areas such as A-Life at Nungua, Sowutuom, Santa Maria and Race Course.
