GRNMA condemns CHAG over “intimidation tactics” against striking nurses

The Ghana Registered Nurses and Midwives Association (GRNMA) has condemned what it describes as “intimidation tactics” by the Christian Health Association of Ghana (CHAG), targeting nurses and midwives who took part in a recent nationwide strike.

In a statement dated July 3, GRNMA alleged that CHAG issued a circular requesting lists of staff who participated in the industrial action, with intention to impose punitive measures such as demotions, salary withholdings, and delayed promotions.

The GRNMA President, Perpetual Ofori-Ampofo, criticised the move as unjust, stating, “It is evidently clear that the welfare of nurses and midwives does not matter to CHAG as an agency under the Ministry of Health.”

She stressed that CHAG’s actions were beyond its mandate, as nurses in CHAG facilities are paid by the government and are entitled to full union rights. The association cited Section 10(d) of the Labour Act, 2003 (Act 651), which guarantees workers the right to participate in trade union activities without fear of victimisation.

GRNMA warned of legal and industrial action should any punitive measures be carried out. “We will use every legitimate means and not hesitate to lay down our tools in support of our colleagues,” the GRNMA stated.

The conflict stems from longstanding grievances over working conditions and delays in implementing a Collective Agreement. While CHAG claims its directive is based on performance and conduct, the GRNMA argues this amounts to retaliation for union activity and contravenes labour law governing essential service disputes.

The association called on the government to intervene immediately, describing the situation as a critical test of labour rights within Ghana’s health sector.

GRNMA General Secretary, Dr David Tenkorang-Twum, affirmed their readiness to defend members. “Leadership will continue to fight for the implementation of our Collective Agreement and protect our rights as workers,” he said.

With tensions escalating, GRNMA has signalled its preparedness to resume industrial action if CHAG does not retract its measures, raising the stakes for a potential disruption of health services nationwide.
