GSS marks World Statistics day, Reaffirms commitment to quality data for national development

The Ghana Statistical Service (GSS) has underscored the critical role of credible and timely data in driving sustainable national development and improving the welfare of citizens.

In a statement issued to mark World Statistics Day on October 20, the GSS emphasised that reliable data remains the foundation of evidence-based decision-making across all sectors of the economy.

It said “quality statistics are far more than numbers, they are the foundation of progress, the mirror of national realities, and the compass for policy direction.”

It explained that from tracking key economic indicators such as inflation and GDP to monitoring progress in health, education, and agriculture, credible data ensures that policy and planning are grounded in evidence rather than assumptions, leading to more inclusive and sustainable outcomes.

“Our goal is simple but powerful: to make quality statistics an everyday tool for decision-making at all levels of society,” it added.

The Service further called on all stakeholders, including government agencies, the private sector, development partners, academia, and civil society, to make data a central component of planning and policy formulation.

“Behind every statistic is a life, a community, and a future that data can help improve,” the GSS added.
