Republic Day

A Public Health Nurse at the Ghana Health Service, Madam Veronica Amoakoh, disclosed this at a durbar to educate some senior citizens in the district as part of the 56th Republic Day celebration.

The event was also used to honour 40 senior citizens who were each presented with a full piece of cloth in recognition of their contributions to the development of the district and the nation during their active service.

Madam Amoakoh stated that at the end of the first quarter of 2016, the district had also recorded a total of 516 cases of hypertension which showed that the disease was reducing in the district.

Causes

She said excessive alcohol intake and smoking were major causes of the disease and, therefore, urged them to put an end to such practices so as to prolong their lifespan.

She noted that eating fatty foods should not be encouraged, since the continuous intake of such foods increased an individual’s risk of contracting the disease.

She further admonished them to manage stress and loneliness during their period of retirement because through that they could add more years to their lives.

The District Chief Executive for Gomoa East, Mr Jonamoah Moses Jehu-Appiah, urged the senior citizens to take their health seriously for them to live longer so that they could impart their knowledge to the current generation.

He indicated that the nation recognised their efforts and toil that had brought the nation to its current state.

He said it was important that they were honoured so as to serve as a morale booster to the current generation.
