I want to be remembered as the Finance Minister who reduced food prices, stabilised the cedi - Ato forson
Finance Minister-designate Dr Cassiel Ato Forson has pledged to focus on reducing inflation, stabilising the cedi, and creating jobs if his appointment is confirmed.
Speaking during his vetting before Parliament’s Appointments Committee on Monday, January 13, 2025, Dr Forson outlined his plans to tackle Ghana’s economic challenges, emphasising that achieving these priorities would define his tenure.
“Inflation is at 28.3 per cent, with food inflation at 27.8 per cent. This is unacceptable, and we must act swiftly to bring relief to Ghanaians,” he said.
Dr Ato Forson promised to prioritise agricultural investment to make food cheaper and ensure food security.
He noted that mechanising and modernising the agricultural sector would not only reduce prices but also create jobs.
On stabilising the cedi, Dr Ato Forson stressed the need for collaboration between the Ministry of Finance and the Bank of Ghana.
“Fiscal authorities must work hand-in-hand with the central bank. We cannot leave currency stabilisation to the Bank of Ghana alone,” he stated.
He also vowed to end monetary financing and adopt strict fiscal consolidation measures to strengthen the economy and reduce inflation to 8 per cent.
Dr Ato Forson assured the committee that his decisions would be guided by the criticisms he made while in opposition.
“I’ve said a lot in the past, and I cannot say one thing and do another. I’m committed to being consistent and delivering on my promises,” he said.
Reflecting on his experience as a former Deputy Finance Minister, Dr Forson expressed confidence in his ability to navigate Ghana’s economic challenges.
He reiterated his commitment to creating sustainable employment by directing resources to key sectors and modernising agriculture to attract the youth.
“I want to be remembered as the Finance Minister who reduced prices, stabilised the cedi, and created jobs,” he stated.
