IGP Yohuno seals NYPD deal to step up Ghana’s fight against crime

Ghana Police and New York Police agree to position officers at each others headquaters to strengthen Ghana’s fight against crime

The Ghana Police Service has reached a bilateral agreement with the New York Police Department (NYPD) that will see police officers from Ghana and New York both stationed at each other’s headquarters to strengthen intelligence sharing and modern policing.

The agreement was concluded during a high-level working visit to the NYPD headquarters at One Police Plaza in New York City on October 14, 2025.

It forms part of efforts to deepen cooperation between Ghana and the United States in security and law enforcement.

Ghana Police made this known in a statement on Tuesday, October 21, 2025.

Under the arrangement, the NYPD will assign an officer to the Ghana Police Service headquarters in Accra through its International Liaison Unit, while the Ghana Police Service will post a liaison officer to the NYPD’s Regional Intelligence Support Centre in New York.

The exchange programme will allow the two agencies to share intelligence, improve operational coordination, and promote professional training.

During bilateral talks with the NYPD Commissioner, Jessica Tisch, and her executive team, the Inspector-General of Police (IGP) for Ghana, Christian Tetteh Yohuno said areas of cooperation in technology-led policing, counterterrorism, intelligence-based operations, and urban crime prevention will be their focus.

Commissioner Tisch briefed the Ghanaian delegation on the NYPD’s advanced policing systems, including the use of integrated surveillance cameras, real-time crime centres, and drone technology to improve response to incidents.

Mr Yohuno also witnessed a live demonstration of how the NYPD deploys drones and camera networks to monitor activities, track suspects, and prevent crime in real time.

“Seeing how the NYPD employs drone and camera technology to prevent crime in real time shows how important technology has become in modern policing,” Mr Yohuno said. “The Ghana Police Service is working to apply similar smart policing tools to make our communities safer and more secure.”

Commissioner Tisch commended Ghana for its growing role in regional security and expressed the NYPD’s readiness to deepen cooperation through training and operational support.

The visit ended with a tour of the NYPD’s Joint Operations and Counterterrorism Centres, where the Ghanaian delegation observed how technology and interagency coordination enhance public safety in a large city environment.

Before visiting the NYPD, Mr Yohuno held discussions at the FBI New York Field Office, focusing on cybercrime, transnational fraud, and counterterrorism investigations.

According to the Police , both engagements were supported by the FBI Legal Attaché Office and the United States Embassy in Accra. They reflect the strengthening of Ghana-US security relations and the shared interest in tackling global crime threats through innovation and partnership.
