She said by so doing, the youth would be able to spearhead national development to make the country a better place to live.

Madam Antwi-Adjei made the call at a forum organised by the Bosomtwe District Assembly for senior citizens, as part of activities marking the nation’s 56th Republic Day at Kuntanase, last weekend.

The forum was attended by more than 160 senior citizens from various communities in the district.

The DCE said the experiences of the senior citizens acquired at home and in their diverse fields of endeavour when shared with the youth, would bring great development to society.

 Instil discipline

“There is the need for us all to counsel the youth in order to help instil discipline, respect for the elderly, and patriotism in them,” she said.

She debunked the notion that celebrating the senior citizens was a waste of resources, and said people who had sacrificed so much for the nation should be appreciated for the good work they had done to bring this country thus far.

Advice

She also cautioned the youth not to from shunnin the aged, since ageing was natural and inevitable.

Madam Antwi-Adjei appealed to relatives of the aged, especially their children, to desist from harassing them, particularly women of menopausal stage, and rather be patient with them when they did things they did not like.

The Sewuahene, Nana Kwaku Amankwah Sarkodie, entreated traditional authorities and the elderly in society to lead the crusade for discipline so that the people, especially the youth, could learn and benefit from it.

The chief urged traditional authorities to liaise with the clergy to bring back celebration of puberty rites, and added that the performance of such rites did not prevent one from worshiping God, or being a Christian.

Premarital sex

The Aputuogyahemaa, Nana Afia Serwaah, tasked parents to guide their children against engaging in premarital sex so that they could concentrate on their education and vocational training to prepare them well for future life.

After the forum, some of the aged shared their life experiences with the young people present after which they were feted with various meals.

They also had the opportunity to dance to old-time highlife tunes as well as contemporary Ghanaian songs before being presented with gifts.
