Ghana’s love for jollof has produced another entertaining chapter, and this time, rapper Sarkodie appears to be the unwilling main character.
What started with a revelation by dancehall artiste Stonebwoy about a plate of jollof served to Sarkodie in his house has quickly turned into a full-blown social media feast, with fans digging into old posts and even dragging actress Yvonne Nelson into the pot.
Stonebwoy recently recounted that Sarkodie once visited his home to apologise following their infamous Ghana Music Awards/VGMA episode and, in what may now be remembered as one of the most talked-about peace meals in Ghanaian entertainment, was served jollof.
That revelation was enough to send social media into overdrive.
Suddenly, the question was no longer about the apology, the awards incident or even the relationship between the two artistes.
It was: Who cooked the jollof?
Stonebwoy has indicated that he cooked the meal, while a video circulating online has reignited claims that the jollof was actually prepared by his wife, Dr Louisa.
And just when Ghanaians thought the matter could not get any more interesting, the internet went digging into the archives.
Enter Yvonne Nelson.
Old social media conversations involving the actress have resurfaced, with references to Sarkodie, a beach house and—yes—jollof with fried eggs.
The resurfaced material has given social media users another reason to joke that Sarkodie’s relationship with jollof may be more enduring than some of his musical collaborations. Reports from 2023 documented the resurfacing of old posts in which Nelson referenced “Opana” and jollof with fried eggs, prompting fans to connect the dots to Sarkodie.
So, while Sarkodie may have spent years building a reputation as one of Ghana’s finest rappers, social media appears determined to add another title to his résumé: Jollof Connoisseur.
And the jokes have not stopped there.
Shatta Wale has also joined the teasing, referring to Sarkodie as “Sark Jollof Lord” in a playful post, adding another layer to what has become one of the lighter entertainment stories dominating social media conversations.
For now, the great Ghanaian jollof debate has taken a new direction.
There are questions over who cooked it, who served it, whether Dr Louisa’s version or Stonebwoy’s version deserves the credit, and whether Sarkodie actually has a special attachment to jollof and fried eggs.
But perhaps there is one thing Ghanaians can agree on: when celebrities bring jollof into the conversation, the internet will not leave the pot covered.
