Inland Canoe Fishermen Council elects officers

The National Inland Canoe Fishermen Council (NICFC) has elected a seven-member executive to run the affairs of the council for the next five years.

It is under the chairmanship of Mr Jacob Tetteh Ageke, a renowned fisherman in the Volta riverine area.

Mr Tetteh Ageke polled 49 votes as against 30 by the closest contestant, Mr Sampson Mahu, out of the 79 delegates from 32 districts of the five riverine regions of Ghana.

Elections

The elections were conducted by officials of the Electoral Commission at the Young Women Christian Association (YWCA) Conference Hall in Accra.

In his victory speech, the newly elected chairman said the council would roll out programmes to promote the fishing industry in the country and well-being of fishermen and women.

He appealed to the government and the National Premix Fuel Committee to continue its good work in making fishing equipment and Premix available for inland fishermen to help them improve their lives and contribute positively to the development of the country.

Mr Ageke said some of the key projects to be undertaken by the new executive included the provision of an ultra-modern fish market for fishmongers and the acquisition of pumping machines for farmers who plied their trade along the banks of rivers and lakes.

The National Inland Canoe Fishermen Council is the umbrella group of fishermen who carry out their fishing on the banks of the Volta Lake and other lake areas in the country.

Other officers elected were Yussif Appeh Apetorgbor, National Vice-Chairman; Mr Robert Azumah, National Secretary; Mr Francis Senahe, National Assistant Secretary; Mr Adamali Kpodo Richard, National Coordinator, and Madam Esi Delight Ametepe, National Treasurer.
