Jubilee House denies granting Presidential pardons
The Office of the President has dismissed claims circulating in sections of the media that President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has granted presidential pardons to certain individuals.
In a statement released on January 6, 2025, by the Jubilee House Communications Directorate, Director of Communications Eugene Arhin categorically refuted the reports.
"We wish to categorically state that these assertions are inaccurate, and no pardon has been granted by President Akufo-Addo," the statement read.
The statement further urged the public to disregard the claims, stressing: "The public is kindly urged to disregard any contrary information and rely on official communications from the Office of the President."
Background on pardon rumours
Speculations about the pardons stemmed from reports that President Akufo-Addo, in his final days in office, had exercised his prerogative of mercy under Article 72(1) of Ghana’s Constitution to release or reduce the sentences of several convicted individuals.
Additionally, it was alleged that the President had consulted the Council of State regarding pardons for other inmates, including long-term prisoners and those facing severe health challenges.
