The two generators with accessories, which each cost €411, 000 was airlifted into the country last Friday from Vitoria- Spain.

The gensets have since been delivered to the mines by Allship Logistics Limited at Chirano, Bibiani in the Western Region.

According to Kinross Gold Mines, formerly Chirano Gold Mines, the airlifting of the sets became necessary as a result of a delay by the supplier for two months.

Mining companies are among the hardest hardest hit industries by the current power crisis bedeviling the country and affecting the economy.

Their power intake has been cut down by close to 30 per cent.

This development has worsened an already wobbly situation within the sector, as companies grapple with record-low gold prices amidst higher production costs.

Some mining companies are taking austere measures to survive by laying off workers.

Kwesi Wilson of Kinros Gold Mines told the media that the company purchased the generators due to the erratic power supply in the country.

He said the unreliable power supply was affecting the company’s operations, stating “We need power stability to work. Without purchasing the generator sets we cannot work efficiently and workers would be laid off.”

“We don’t want to lay off workers as other mining companies have done in recent times due to the power situation in the country, hence the purchase of the two generators”.
