The centre is equipped with tools for the construction of teaching/learning materials to help teachers plan and prepare for lessons and also facilitate the teaching/learning process through creative learning.

Under a capacity building component of the facility, a group of teachers have been trained as trainers to help create teaching\learning materials for classroom instruction and literacy development.

The teachers were trained to create materials from wastes such as gallons, vehicle tyres, wood offcuts, glass, pipe, plastic and other materials in their immediate environment.

Teachers who benefited from the training would be capable of transferring their skills to other teachers in the communities in the districts.

The Resource Centre has a section where teachers can plan and prepare for lessons and learning, equipped with teaching/learning materials, which the teachers have constructed for teaching and learning processes.

The facility also has a welding station, where tools and worktables are located for practical work for teachers to build and construct teaching/learning materials for classroom instruction.

At the handover ceremony, the President of the Western Nzema Traditional Council, Awulae Annor Adjaye III, commended Kosmos Energy for its continuous support for education and other social investments in the area.

He said experience had shown that theoretical education alone over the years had not yielded much for the benefit of the country.

The paramount chief said a combination of practical and theory using materials in the children’s immediate environment would help them to better appreciate what the teacher wanted to pass on to them.

He said though there were many oil companies in the country, the partnership between Kosmos and the area was strong: “anything we ask they provide for us —water, ICT centre, mosquito eradication, health among others”.

For his part, Mr Kofi Opoku, the Deputy Director of Finance and Administration of Kosmos, said the need to build the capacity of teachers was very critical, as the performance of students, one way or the other, depended on how resourceful teachers were.

“The resource centre has fully been furnished with educational materials which will help improve literacy in our community schools. As part of the package, there are special educational materials which will help teachers to teach phonic sounds and pronunciations,” he said.

Mr Opoku expressed the hope that the flash cards and other learning materials would provide fundamental knowledge of occupations in the oil and gas sector.

He said it was gratifying to note that the educational materials at the centre were prepared by teachers from the host school after their training with Kokrobitey Institute.

The community

The deputy director said the centre was not only for the training in learning activities, but also provided other occupational learning opportunities that ought to be leveraged by the community.

“Just as our other projects of Kosmos Energy, we have created a steering committee that will ensure the resource centre is sustained and ensure teachers deliver as expected,” he added.

The Deputy Western Regional Minister, Mr Alfred Ekow Gyan, commended Kosmos for the support in areas of education and other social investments.

The dignitaries, schoolchildren and other members of the communities were conducted round the facility by the Kokrobitey Institute which was contracted to put the facility together.
