Former President John Agyekum Kufuor has asked the media to connect Africans beyond borders, saying media organisations have to become an “electronic classroom” to connect young people across borders and give citizens greater access to knowledge, ideas and opportunities.
Speaking at a convention of Broadcasters in West Africa 2026 on Tuesday [September 22, 2026[, Mr Kufuor said digitalisation and emerging technologies had created an opportunity for the media to help Africans learn more about one another and develop a shared African consciousness.
He said digital platforms could cross borders instantly, while artificial intelligence could help overcome language barriers and widen access to knowledge.
“The media can become an electronic classroom and a mouthpiece for Africa,” he said.
Mr Kufuor said the proposed role of the media was important because discussions about Pan-Africanism and African integration had largely remained among presidents, governments, academics and institutions instead of reaching citizens at the grassroots.
He said the media could help bridge the gap by connecting African citizens with information, ideas and opportunities from across the continent.
