LEKMA demolishes illegal structures at Manet Junction

The Ledzokuku Municipal Assembly (LEKMA) has carried out a demolition exercise to clear containers and other illegal structures at Manet Junction along the Spintex Road.

The exercise, which was supervised by officials of the assembly with support from the Ayawaso West and La Dadekotopon Municipal Assemblies saw over 200 illegal structures, some of which served as residential accommodation, garages, vulcanising shops and chop bars, brought down by the assembly's taskforce.

While some structures were salvaged by their owners, others were completely destroyed in the exercise.

Reactions 

Some of the victims who described the exercise as inhumane condemned the assembly for the manner in which the exercise was carried out.

While some accused officials of the assembly for conducting an impromptu exercise, others claimed some announcements were made to that effect.

Notice

However, the Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) of LEKMA, Mr Mordecai Quarshie who led the operation said adequate notice was served the affected people contrary to assertions that they were not notified.

According to him, the exercise which should have been carried out after the Easter holidays was postponed to give the squatters enough time to vacate the area.

The MCE said apart from the eviction markings on the structures, the assembly also engaged the people and advised them on the need to leave the area.

He said the occupants had been there without authorisation, and that the exercise became necessary to make way for road construction that would connect the Spintex Road to Nmai Dzor.

He said in order to prevent people from returning to the site, the assembly had put in place measures to regularly monitor activities along the stretch.
