Let’s be more responsible on the road — NRSC boss

The Ashanti Regional Director of the National Road Safety Commission (NRSC), Mr Thomas Bismarck Boakye, has urged Ghanaians to render timely assistance to road accident victims in order to help save lives.

He said it was sad to note that instead of rescuing accident victims, people who get to the scene preferred to use their cellphones to take pictures of the injured and post them on social media.

“The most shameful part is that those who go to help the victims take advantage of their vulnerability and rob them,” he said.

Road safety measures

Mr Boakye, who was speaking at a press conference in Kumasi, said the NRSC had put in place measures to control road accidents and placed lollipop stands at vantage points in towns and cities to aid children especially to cross roads safely.

He urged road users to be more responsible and on the lookout for children crossing the road at all times.

He counselled drivers to take a rest after several hours of driving and added that tiredness and stress were major contributors to road accidents.

He said the NRSC would strictly enforce its bye-laws, which include the requirement for all commercial vehicles to have seatbelts installed on them by the end of the first quarter of 2015.

According to Mr Boakye, in a move to build the capacity of drivers, the NRSC would soon establish a drivers’ training school.

Role of media

He urged the media to give more prominence to road safety issues in order to sensitise the public to adopt good practices on the road.

He said such public education would help people to become more responsible.

He further urged the media to get their facts right before reporting on accident cases.

The Head of Planning, Monitoring, and Evaluation at the Transport Department of the Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly (KMA), Mr Randy Wilson, said the city authority would enforce bye-laws on road safety to make sure that the city was free from accidents.
