Madina washing bay fire contained, one firefighter injured
A fierce fire outbreak that swept through several makeshift wooden and metal structures at the Madina Washing Bay near Redco Flats has been contained by the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS).
The affected structures, used for both commercial and residential purposes, were razed down along with utility poles, traders’ wares, and personal belongings, all estimated to be worth several thousand Ghana cedis.
In a statement issued by the Service, the GNFS noted that it received the distress call at 12:36 pm on Sunday and responded swiftly, with the first fire crew from the Madina Fire Station arriving at 12:40 pm to battle the fully developed fire.
Four additional fire engines from Legon, Abelempke, and the GNFS Headquarters were quickly mobilised to assist in containing the fire.
“The fire was confined at 13:42 hours and fully brought under control by 13:54 hours,” the Service said.
Overhaul operations continued until 8:50 pm, during which firefighters successfully salvaged multiple adjoining structures and their contents, averting further destruction.
The GNFS confirmed that one firefighter sustained a minor leg injury during the operation but no other casualties were reported.
An investigation is currently underway to determine the cause of the fire.
