I'll establish public university in Ahafo Region to train students in agric – President Mahama

President John Dramani Mahama has announced that a public university will be established in the Ahafo Region to train students in agriculture, natural resources, and health sciences.

He made the announcement on Saturday, May 31, 2025, during a stop in Goaso as part of his nationwide “Thank You” tour following the 2024 general elections.

The planned university will be the first in the region.

According to President Mahama, it is intended to widen access to tertiary education while preparing students for careers that match the area’s agricultural and resource-based economy.

“This university will offer quality education in agriculture, natural resources, and health sciences,” Mr Mahama said.

He explained that the project forms part of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) government’s effort to improve educational access in less-served parts of the country.

Mr Mahama also stated that some nursing and midwifery training colleges in Ahafo would be upgraded to degree-awarding institutions.

He added that the distribution of buses to senior high schools and health training colleges would continue to support academic work.

The university project is expected to ease the pressure on students in the region who often have to travel to other parts of the country to access tertiary education, especially in science-related fields.
