Man jailed for chopping off driver’s arm

A 22-year-old coconut seller, Kwabena Agyare, alias Bukari, was yesterday jailed 30 years with hard labour by a Kumasi Circuit Court for chopping off a driver’s arm.

Agyare is said to have cut off the left hand of Akwasi Addae, the driver, and slashed his right cheek with a machete he picked from a truck.

That, according to the prosecution, followed a misunderstanding between the two over a damaged mobile phone belonging to Agyare.

Agyare pleaded guilty to the one count of causing unlawful harm and prayed the court not to jail him but allow him to work to get GH¢10,000 to compensate Addae.

The court, presided over by Mr William Boapomg, however, did not consider his plea.

Facts

Prosecuting, Inspector Gullivan Kwabena Tenkorang said the victim was a driver and resident of Krofrom, while the convict was a coconut seller and resident of Bosore, both suburbs of Kumasi.

He said some time ago, Addae approached Agyare and borrowed his phone to make an urgent call.

However, he said while making the call, the phone fell into a gutter full of water and as a result the phone got damaged.

According to the prosecution, Agyare became offended and demanded that the victim replace the phone for him.

In order not to prolong the issue, Inspector Tenkorang said Addae replaced the damaged phone with his mobile phone.

He said at about 9 p.m. on February 12, this year, Addae met Agyare at Suame Roundabout and approached him to tell him that since he had collected his (victim) phone to replace his damaged phone, “he should make sure he does not offend him.”

This, he said, resulted in a misunderstanding and during a fight, Agyare picked a machete from the truck of a witness in the case and cut the left hand of Addae and inflicted cutlass wounds on other parts of his body.

Sensing danger, Inspector Tenkorang said Agyare ran to the Suame Police Station and reported himself and was detained.

Addae was rushed to the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital where he has been on admission for two months.
