Muntaka: This is how the incoming Minister-Designate for the Interior plans to tackle Police misconduct

The Minister-Designate for the Interior, Mohammed Muntaka Mubarak, has unveiled a bold plan to address police misconduct, including extortion and brutality, through the mandatory use of body cameras by officers in Ghana.

During his vetting by Parliament’s Appointments Committee on Friday, January 24, 2025, the Asawase Member of Parliament emphasised that this initiative would enhance accountability and rebuild public trust in the Ghana Police Service.

Muntaka pointed to the rising public outcry against incidents of police brutality and extortion, highlighting the detrimental impact these issues have had on confidence in law enforcement agencies.

As part of his strategy, he proposed a policy requiring every police officer to wear and activate a body camera whenever performing official duties.

Explaining his proposal to the Committee, Muntaka said the introduction of body cameras would provide an unbiased and transparent record of police interactions with the public. This, he argued, would eliminate ambiguity in cases of alleged misconduct.

“We will ensure that if you are a police officer and you have to step out, then you have your body camera on to take away all the ambiguity and the troubles because when you put the body camera on, everywhere you are, you are being recorded,” he stated.

The Minister-Designate added, “So that when you are on the road extorting money and brutalise others, it will show and record whatever the police officer is doing.”

If approved by Parliament, Muntaka’s proposal could mark a significant step in addressing systemic issues within Ghana’s law enforcement agencies and improving relations between the police and the public.
