The National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO) has presented relief items to 850 people in 11 communities in the Ada West and East districts who were displaced by tidal waves in May this year.

The waves, which destroyed property worth thousands of Ghana cedis, also left the residents jobless.

The communities are Anyamam, Wekumagbe, Akplabanya, Goi, Lolonya, Kpotitse Kope and Kegblevu.

The rest are Sorkope, Agbedrafo, Nakomkope and Mataheko.

The consignment included 200 boxes containing a mattress and a bucket each, 400 buckets, 500 plates, five bags of clothing, a variety of food items and 40 pairs of Wellington boots for the NADMO officers in the Ada District.
Addressing members of the Ada West District Assembly, the National Co-ordinator of NADMO, Mr Kofi Portuphy, said  engineers from South

Africa would soon be deployed to assess the damage in the affected areas and prescribe the required engineering works.
He explained that the exercise was intended to help restore the district to its former state, as well as protect the coastline from future destruction.

Challenges
Mr Portuphy said one of the many challenges facing the people in the district was the lack of social and other amenities, particularly water.
He said one of the main tributaries of the Volta River was now blocked, making it difficult for the communities that relied on it, to get good quality water.

He said NADMO, in conjunction with the Ada District Assembly and the Member of Parliament for the area, has started desilting the stream, "and we have done about 12 miles of it."

Mr Portuphy disclosed that there were currently some challenges with funding, and expressed the hope that donor agencies, particularly the Japanese Government, which had helped with equipment to desilt the stream, would continue with its support.

Block making
In a meeting with some of the affected persons in two communities, Wekumagbe and Akplabanya, Mr Portuphy advised the residents to stop winning sand along the coast.

He said that activity was damaging the coastline and made it easy for their items to be destroyed anytime there was a tidal wave or flood.

The District Chief Executive for Ada West, Mr Tony Yaw Klokpa, who received the items on behalf of the beneficiaries, lauded NADMO for supporting the people of Ada.
