Nursing Council warns nurses and midwives against misuse of uniforms and false health claims on social media

The Nursing and Midwifery Council of Ghana (N&MC) has warned trainee nurses, midwives, and practitioners about the rising cases of unprofessional conduct on social media, which risk undermining public trust in the health profession.

In a public notice issued on October 6, 2025, the Council stated that it had observed videos and posts involving student nurses, nurse assistants, and midwives engaging in behaviour that contradicts the profession’s Code of Ethics and Professional Conduct.

According to the Council, the misconduct includes the misuse of nursing uniforms in unauthorised online content, the use of abusive or derogatory language towards superiors and other health stakeholders, and the spread of misleading or unverified health information under the guise of public education.

“Any conduct that undermines integrity, respect, professionalism and ethical responsibility not only tarnishes the image of the profession but also erodes public trust in the healthcare system,” the statement said.

The Council reminded practitioners that it is the only body with the legal mandate to accredit training institutions and license individuals to practise as nurse assistants, nurses, and midwives in Ghana.

It stressed that no individual or group is allowed to offer health education or professional guidance on social media using the Council’s name or uniform without prior approval.

The Registrar of the Council cautioned that disciplinary measures, including suspension or revocation of licences, will be applied against any student or practitioner found guilty of breaching professional standards.

The statement urged all health workers and trainees to desist from such acts, uphold the dignity of the nursing and midwifery professions, and report unethical behaviour to the Council for action.

The warning comes at a time of growing concern over the misuse of professional uniforms and the circulation of unverified medical advice on platforms such as TikTok, Instagram, and Facebook, trends that have drawn public criticism and raised questions about discipline and professionalism in Ghana’s health workforce.
