Osafo-Maafo attends Ministerial Leadership Forum

Yaw Osafo-MaafoThe US-based Harvard School of Public Health (HSPH) has invited Mr Yaw Osafo-Maafo, a former Minister of Finance and Economic Planning, as a resource person at a Ministerial Leadership Forum on Health Finance from April 21 to 24, 2013.

In an invitation letter to the former finance minister, Mr Julio Frenk, Dean of the Faculty of HSPH and Chair of the Advisory Board, Ministerial Leadership in Health Programme, wrote: “I am writing to invite you to contribute as part of an expert resource group of distinguished current and former ministers and cabinet-level officials to the Harvard Ministerial Forum on Health Finance.

“Your considerable ministerial experience would be of great substantive value to the participating ministers and will add rich, real world perspective to the forum discussions. In addition, your advice and guidance to the participating ministers will provide invaluable support and encouragement in their efforts to use public finance for sustainable economic and social progress in their countries,” the letter said.

Mr Yaw Osafo-Maafo was the Finance & Economic Planning Minister from January, 2001 to 2005 and Education & Sports Minister from 2005 to 2006 during the Kufuor administration.

Fifteen serving African ministers of finance, selected for their record of public finance leadership, will participate in the forum to be held at Harvard University, Cambridge, Massachusetts, USA.  It is the first Ministerial Health Leaders’ Forum for ministers of finance.

The expert resource group, together with senior Harvard faculty, will lead discussion and help facilitate the forum.

Topics to be discussed include: Leadership effectiveness; Health and economic development; Sustainable health financing, and Value for money.

The principal goal of the initiative is to enhance innovative thinking in health financing by learning from international experience and advancing insights into health as a key component of national economic development.

The forum, the first of annual series, is being organised in partnership with the African Development Bank with funding from the Norwegian Agency for Development Co-operation.
