They said in addition to being educative and entertaining, the camp also served as an eye-opener for them, especially those from less endowed schools.

The week-long programme, dubbed, “Forum of Heads of the 38 Girls Senior High Schools (FOHGSHS) 2014”, was attended by 600 girls, 32 headmistresses and 30 teacher chaperons, on the theme, “Empowering the girl-child for effective leadership in the 21st century”.

The prefect for the girls’ camp, Ms Emmanuella Osei Sarfo of the Kumasi Girls Senior High School, said the topics they went through with the resource persons had boosted their morale and raised their self-esteem, as well as their confidence and leadership skills.

“Leadership is not only about having power for people to serve, but it is about knowing how to serve others and setting good examples for others to follow,” she stressed.

Cultures of various schools

“We had also learnt the cultures of the various schools. Even though we are all from girls’ schools, each school has its own way of doing things, and this we learnt in the camp. We shall go and share with our colleagues who did not attend the camp the positive ones,” Emmanuella emphasised.

She said the resource persons had inspired them and they would emulate their actions to also get to their levels, if not higher.

She appealed to the Ghana Education Service (GES) to give more support to FOHGSHS to make it an annual event for more students to benefit.

A teacher chaperon from the Arch Bishop Porter Girls School, Takoradi, Ms Jemilatu Alhassan, remarked that the girls’ camp had groomed the girls for their future development, and advised them to build on what they had learnt this year.

The Headmistress of the Agbakope St Catherine Senior High School in the Volta Region, Ms Martha Adzo Nkegbe, who had attended the camp for the first time, said what she had learnt would go a long way to strengthen her administrative work in her school.

Leadership of FOHGSHS

She praised the leadership of FOHGSHS for their dedication and teamwork which had sustained the group, adding, “We are learning from the old hands.”

The President of FOHGSHS, Mrs Betty Djokoto, who is also the Headmistress of Wesley Girls High School, Cape Coast, said she was grateful to the sponsors– KEDARD, UNIJAY Limited and the Manya Krobo Traditional Council for their assistance in making the camp a success.

She noted that one of the objectives of the camp was to train the girls in leadership skills to enable them to take up very important leadership positions.

“We are using every opportunity to develop you to be responsible; go and be ambassadors in your schools, so as to spread the good news you have heard here,” Mrs Djokoto said.

The old executive members, including the President, Mrs Betty Djokoto; Vice President, Rev. Sr Josephine Anto;  Secretary, Mrs Mercy Ocloo; Treasurer, Ms Charlotte Addo, and Public Relations Officer (P.R.O), Ms Emelia Amartey–Quarcoo, were retained for another two-year term.
