The Ghana National Fire Service has announced plans to launch a nationwide compliance exercise from Wednesday, December 18, 2025, to ensure that all vehicles on Ghana’s roads are equipped with functional, GNFS-certified portable fire extinguishers.
The exercise, led by the GNFS Fire Safety Compliance Taskforce, will be carried out in collaboration with the National Road Safety Authority and the Police Motor Traffic and Transport Department.
In a press release issued on December 16, the Service said its officers would conduct on-the-spot safety inspections at various locations across the country.
Vehicles found to be compliant will be issued certification tags, while drivers without approved fire extinguishers will be educated on the requirements and guided on how to comply.
The GNFS stressed that having a certified and easily accessible fire extinguisher in a vehicle could be the difference between a controllable incident and a devastating fire outbreak.
As part of the exercise, the Service will also engage transport unions and driver associations to promote the acquisition of serviceable extinguishers, proper mounting in vehicles and basic training in their safe and effective use.
Drivers and vehicle owners have been encouraged to ensure the availability of other essential safety items, including warning triangles and first-aid kits, to enhance overall road safety.
The GNFS reaffirmed its commitment to protecting lives and property through enforcement, education and prevention, reminding the public that a prompt response during fire incidents is critical.
“Every second counts when a fire breaks out,” the Service cautioned, urging motorists to cooperate fully with officers during the compliance exercise.
