The non-involvement of qualified project management professionals in some public and private projects has been identified as the cause of the poor execution of such projects.

The President of the Ghana Chapter of the Project Management Institute (PMI), Mr Augustine Harrington-Nunoo, who made the observation, said the situation had resulted in delays in projects, waste of the taxpayer’s money, no value for money and corruption allegations.

"Management of public/private projects and programmes is a challenge for many leaders because a formal process was not in place,"he said.

Mr Harrington-Nunoo said in some cases project objectives were not clearly identified, project requirements were not adequately assessed and the cost and benefits of the deliverables not justified and measured.

He was speaking at the signing of a memorandum of understanding (MOU) between  the Pentecost University College Graduate School (PUCGS) and the Project Management Institute for the training of MBA students in Project Management.

He was pleased that the partnership with the PUCGS would help advance the application of project management knowledge concepts and theory, among not only the graduates of the school, but also other members of  the society.

The Dean of the PUCGS, Professor Kwame B.Omane-Antwi, who signed the MoU on behalf of the university, said the demand for project management was increasingly vital to many areas of businesses as they embarked on more complex projects.

The PUCGS's MBA Project Management course, he said, was structured to train students to apply contemporary project management principles, tools and concepts to mitigate and manage challenges associated with modern project execution.

He said the partnership with PMI would help MBA project management graduates of the school to advance their careers, improve their organisational successes through globally recognised standards, certification, networking and academic research.
